It seems that this is a dramtic instance of induction in the form of the placebo-suggestion effect. This effect has been observed by others. It also the effect that underlies the success of hypnosis and other forms of induction including guided and active imagination. It seems that had the information been anchored in the subconscious, or if a different set of information derived from the news sources hadn't been introduced Mr. Wright would not have died from cancer. So let's ask ourselves what actually took place? It seems as if a particular idea coupled with the man's emotionally charged state do to his cancer the idea through the news of this drug and the fact that it could cure cancer was introduced in the subject's psyche, this information was in turn transduced into a corresponding phenomenon with in the coding of his organismic system. And the result was most miraculous. Now we have to ask ourselves after he recieved a different set of information from his new sources and the cancer grew back, what was the original set of information that was introduced into his organismic system that caused the cancer in the first place? In other words was his cancer causeed by the mind?

[...] “I don’t believe that the use of placebos is immoral or unethical. In reality, it seems that the medical profession’s lack of understanding and utilization of the mechanism of the placebo in the healing process is tragic, shortsighted and cowardly. Cowardly in the aspect that it has been far easier for doctors to simply say that the placebo response is worthless, and nothing more than someone’s wishful thinking or trickery of the mind. The bottom line is the response; for whatever reason, placebos seem to work… patients get better.” http://www.wrf.org/alternative-therapies/power-of-mind-placebo.php [...]

My question to you in reference to the double blind theory is that when receiving the medication would the prescription list be the same for the placebo as for the actual medicine?

The mind is incredibly powerful. It's no wonder the placebo effect works - after all, all healing comes from the mind in the first place, most drugs just stimulate the body's own healing ability because the person taking them believes they will work. So why not a placebo instead!

What if the mechanism of the placebo effect could be harnessed - i.e. what if there was a way to get really good at using the placebo effect so that instead of 30%-60% effectiveness, it would be 80%-90% effective? What if there were already millions of people skilled in various forms of working with the underlying mechanism of the placebo effect? Think about it - the placebo effect involves an intention to get well, and an action to be taken that one believes will be effective. In various forms of energy healing, there is an intention to get well, along with various actions taken, to facilitate the process. I am not trying to invalidate energy healing by comparing it to the placebo effect. Quite the contrary. The question I would like to propose is: "What if the placebo effect was just a very crude form of energy healing? What if we are already highly skilled at using the underlying mechanism of the placebo effect, with our various forms of energy healing (Reiki, acupuncture, etc.)?" Just food for thought...
