Badanius Manuscript - Plate / PageThe manuscript was bound in 16th century crimson velvet and is the earliest treatise on Mexican medicinal plants and native remedies which has ever come down to us.  It is the work of two Aztec Indians, Martinus de la Cruz, a native physician who composed the work in Aztec, and another Indian, Juannes Badianus, who translated the text into Latin.

The manuscript was reprinted in 1940, by the John’s Hopkins Press, and all the quoted material in this article comes from this publication.

“We have always known that the Aztecs had physicians of great experience.  The Spanish conquerors were very much impressed by the medical lore of the Indians and they mentioned it with much praise in all their early reports from Cortez’s letter to Charles V.”

What makes this manuscript very unique is that the information that was provided by the Indians and recorded in the book was unaltered by the recorder and translator. Read the rest

Preventive Health Care Helps Everyone »

Medical research has come a long way, and as a result, people live much longer than they used to. While no one can argue that expanding the average person’s lifespan is good, many folks are not enjoying the quality of life that we would hope as they get older. Many of the elderly have chronic conditions that overwhelm their daily activities or they get diseases repeatedly, which ultimately raises health insurance premiums. Learning about and practicing preventive healthcare, i.e maintaining your body and good health throughout your entire lifetime, is properly the best method to prevent disease from happening in the first place.

When you are sick, you have no choice but to think about your health; it’s right there in your face - you feel awful. Preventive health care must be planned and executed ahead of time, even when illness is absent. You must build healthy habits even when it’s not convenient. You must believe that maintaining a health lifestyle is important enough to make a few sacrifices. Eating right, getting exercise and avoiding destructive substances like tobacco, alcohol and excessive amounts of sugar and salt are crucial, as is getting enough sleep each night. Healthy habits are an “automatic” defense against most illnesses and can provide us a long, healthy - and thus happy - life. Read the rest

The Art of Medicine; Its Destruction by Prescription »

At one time, long ago in our history, medicine was considered an art and not just a profession. To be a physician was a noble and sacred task. During the time of the ancient Greeks we find sacred temples of healing and the physician priests accomplished wonderful and profound healings.
In more modern times, if we consider the 1500s modern compared to 300 BC, we read the words of Paracelsus talking about the sacredness of the medical profession and his thoughts regarding the true art of medicine and the sacred obligation of being a physician. Read the rest

Magnetic Effects on Living Organisms »

The effects of magnets and magnetic fields has been known for a very long time. Galen, a Greek physician around 200 BC, in his book, De Simplicium Medicamentorum Facultatibus, mentions the use of magnets. In 1000 A.D., a famous Persian physician described his findings using magnetism to relieve various disorders. In the early 1500s, the great medical doctor, Paracelsus, wrote several treatises on the use of magnets and magnetism.  While Paracelsus gave many hints for the nature and use of magnetism, it was the writings of a monk by the name of Athanasius Kircher, Father Kircher, who taught a whole philosophy of universal magnetism.
