Kidneys Boosted by Peas

Pea podsCommon garden peas could be used to help people fight high blood pressure and chronic kidney disease, researchers have discovered. Peas have long been recognized as a ‘superfood’ because they are loaded with fibers and vitamins.

But now scientists have uncovered a protein in garden peas that reduced blood pressure in rats by 20%. “In people with high blood pressure, our protein could potentially delay or prevent the onset of kidney damage,” said study author Rotimi Aluko, a food chemist at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada.
